Do you need financial help as a single mom in Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Pierre or Mobridge? There is still grant money, cash, food and utility assistance available through the state and Federal Government. You just need to know where the programs are in your area.
CASH – This may be the first time you just can’t make ends meet. The South Dakota Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Program is available if you qualify. http://dss.sd.gov/tanf/
FOOD – The food stamp program in South Dakota may be able to help you and your kids. http://dss.sd.gov/offices/. Aurora County, Brandon, Flandreau, Sioux City, Sturgis, Bison, Brookings, Fort Thompson, Ipswich, Elk Point, Lake Andes, Rapid City,
Gregory, Lake Andes, Lemmon, Britton, Marty, Rapid City and Aberdeen are some of the areas where you can get help from food banks. Dial 211 or 605-339-4357 or go to: http://www.irissoft.com/vaic/search.asp for more information.
GRANTS -There is a Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) that is available to see if you can qualify for a school grant that may not need to be repaid. If you are an excellent student with high grades in your first year of college, there are usually other grants available in the second year of college. Start at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
UTILITIES – The South Dakota Low Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) provides financial help to low income families to help pay their heating bills. You must show proof of income and your home heating costs to see if you qualify. 800-233-8503.
MEDICAL – If you know you won’t qualify your kids for state medical help, there is another program called The Children’s Health Insurance Program ( CHIP) that provides free health insurance for doctor appointments, vision and dental services to South Dakota children that qualify under the family income guidelines.
